Congratulations to doctoral study Helen Kim on receiving the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship for 2017-18. This fellowship was established to assist the future of women in aerospace and related sciences and engineering. It is awarded annually to only 35 women from a pool of applicants world-wide, and recognizes those who demonstrate an outstanding academic record.

Helen works with Professor JK Yang in the Laboratory for Engineered Materials and Structures. Her research is focused on designing novel structures for efficient impact mitigation. She is particularly interested in tailoring dynamic responses of structures by controlling the propagation of stress waves in them. The technology developed can be useful for developing advanced aerospace structures, e.g., next-generation landing structures and protective layers, with superior energy absorption performances.
