A&A's Karen Leung receives UW award for excellence in guiding undergraduate researchers and fostering inclusivity.
Assistant professor Karen Leung was one of eight recipients of the 2024 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award from the UW Office of Undergraduate Research. This recognition, presented at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, celebrates excellence in guiding undergraduates through their research journeys.
Professor Leung was chosen from a pool of 465 nominations submitted by students across the UW. Her selection highlights her exceptional commitment to fostering undergraduate research and creating an inclusive, supportive environment for students to thrive.
Students who nominated Professor Leung praised her dedication, mentioning her consistent availability for weekly meetings despite a busy schedule, her efforts to connect students with networking opportunities, and her ability to balance support with independence in research projects. One student noted, "Under her mentorship, I've not only grown as a researcher but also gained the confidence to continue in academia."
The selection committee considered not only the compelling statements from current students but also Professor Leung's sustained efforts in supporting undergraduate researchers, her commitment to promoting inclusion and student wellbeing, and the high quality of work produced by her students.
A&A Chair Kristi Morgansen commented on this achievement: "We are thrilled to see Professor Leung recognized for her outstanding mentorship. Karen's ability to inspire and guide students, while fostering their independence, is truly noteworthy. We congratulate her on this well-deserved honor, and we are fortunate to have her as part of our faculty.”
