The 3x3 Low-Speed Wind Tunnel is a valuable research resource that requires proper planning and training before use. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure a smooth reservation and testing experience.
Prioritization and scheduling
Reservations are prioritized as follows:
- Academic courses
- Faculty research
- Student/RSO use
UW students, faculty, and staff may view the wind tunnel schedule by signing in to their UW Google account.
Requirements
- All team members conducting the test must complete required EH&S training.
- All undergraduate users must be registered for AA298, AA321, AA322, or be on an approved AA Capstone Team.
- Only those with written approval by the wind tunnel manager can get into the 3x3 facility.

How to submit a 3x3 Wind Tunnel request
Prepare materials (>1 month before desired test)
All requests must be submitted at least one month in advance. Before submitting your request, review the following materials:
- Model design guide
- 3x3 Wind Tunnel
- Balance specifications
- Required EH&S trainings
- Prepare your model specifications, drawings, test plan details and load calculations
Submit your request form
- Fill out the Wind Tunnel Request and Test Plan Form.
- Include model specifications, drawings, test plan and load calculations.
Get confirmation from our team
- You will receive a response from our staff that includes any required adjustments to your model design or test plan.
- After your reservation is confirmed, the wind tunnel team will reach out to schedule in-person safety orientations and a model review at least 1 week before your test begins.
Note: It is recommended that you allow 2 weeks to adjust the model design and address structural or operational concerns.
Complete required training
All team members must complete the following list of online EH&S training courses before completing a model review. Team members can confirm their completed EH&S trainings on the EH&S website.
Complete a model review (1 week before test)
The wind tunnel team will reach out to schedule a model review. During this review you will examine the completed model, fit-check with the wind tunnel and re-evaluation of load calculations as needed.
Complete a structural test (On or before test start-date)
- Orient model at edge-of-envelope condition (ex. AOA @ max lift, yaw @ max drag, etc)
- Increase Q, check model + balance readings, repeat until at max Q
Conducting the test
- You will receive 24/7 card access to the facility for your reserved period.
- Bring written approval of your model and test plan from your PI.
- Follow all safety protocols established during training
