Lars Andersen to be 2018 Graduation Speaker

We are honored to welcome Lars Q. Andersen (BS '68 and 2011 A&A Distinguished Alumnus) as keynote speaker of our 2018 Graduation celebration. Andersen earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the UW while concurrently earning two varsity letters in Crew and the inspirational award in 1968. Upon graduating he worked as a propulsion engineer at Pratt &Whitney Aircraft Engines while concurrently completing a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1972. He began working for Boeing in 1973.

After thirty four years of leadership at Boeing , culminating as Vice President/Program Manager with responsibility for all models of the 777 family of airplanes. Andersen retired in 2007. Three years later, Boeing called him back to serve as Vice President of 777 Product Development reporting to the CEO. He was charged with leading the definition of the next derivative of the 777 that would have 20% better fuel efficiency than the best selling 777-300ER. The 777-9X and -8X were launched in 2013 with airline orders for 259 airplanes. Andersen worked in this role until 2017 when he retired again. He is a member of the A&A Visiting Committee, and continues to be a strong supporter of our department and our students.
