Anthony WaasA Message from the Chair

The history of air and space flight is filled with contributions from the faculty, students and alumni of the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics. Our highest priority is educating tomorrow’s leaders in aerospace engineering. Our students learn core fundamentals, systems analysis, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative problem solving. They apply this knowledge in the classroom through hands-on capstone design projects and by participating in cutting-edge research. Graduates of our Bachelor of Science, Master of Aerospace Engineering, Master of Science and Doctoral degree programs go on to become leaders throughout the aerospace industry and academia.

Our faculty members are also leaders—in education and in research. Research in our department is opening doors to new technologies in the aerospace industry and beyond, such as:

  • development of advanced autonomous vehicles
  • unconventional space propulsion concepts
  • creating more durable, lightweight structures
  • multi-disciplinary optimization
  • clean energy from fusion
  • computational aerosciences
  • hypersonics research

Our faculty, students and alumni are at the nexus of new space, and are creating the future of automated aerospace manufacturing, novel aerospace materials, and autonomous aerospace systems. They make our department and the University of Washington proud.
