Originally from eastern Canada, Dave Russell studied at the University of New Brunswick, transferred to the University of Southern California to complete a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and earned a Master of Science degree in aeronautics and a PhD in aeronautics and physics at the California Institute of Technology (1961). He then carried out research in rarefied gas dynamics as a senior scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Attracted to the University of Washington to work with Abe Hertzberg in 1967, he was promoted to professor in 1974, and served as chair of the Department from 1977 to 1992. He retired in 2000.
