Advising and Registration

Advising: The department advising office is located in 211C Guggenheim Hall. It is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for academic advising, course scheduling, or general information. If you have any questions, you should consult with the departmental Undergraduate Academic Advisor, Marlo Anderson in person, by phone (206-616-1115), or by e-mail (ugadvising@aa.washington.edu). Various advising resources are available in the Department office for student use. If you have any questions about aerospace engineering as a profession, or undergraduate research you are welcome to contact any of the Aeronautics and Astronautics faculty who will be happy to assist you.

Evaluation of Credits: Current University of Washington students should be aware of their remaining requirements if all their credits have been taken at the University of Washington. The degree audit records system (DARS) should be able to show you any remaining credits that may be required and can be found under your MyUW home page.

Transfer students entering the University from a 2-year college are limited in the number of credits they may apply towards their 4-year degree. Students transferring to the University from another 4-year college are not, but must complete a minimum of 45 credits in residence at the University of Washington. You should have received a copy of your evaluation of transfer credits from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, showing how they have evaluated your credits and equivalencies to University courses. Transfer students receive specific U of W course transfer credit when courses are similar. Otherwise, general credits are granted Area X and may be applied to the program with the approval of the department. In some cases further evaluation by other Engineering department faculty or other University departments may be required. You should make an appointment with the Academic Advisor to go over your transfer credits to see if they need further evaluation.

Curriculum Sheet: You may use this Curriculum Worksheet to keep a record of progress toward a B.S.A.A.E. Degree. You should enter courses completed on this curriculum sheet at the end of each quarter. The appropriate classifications for each course may be determined from the lists in the appendix on this web site, from the University's Equivalency Guide for Washington Community and Technical Colleges (if you not currently a registered U of W student) or by inquiring at the Departmental Office.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

Continuing Students (Pre-registration):

Students who are attending the University should pre-register for the next regular academic quarter. Pre-registration for both Summer and Autumn Quarters takes place during the preceding spring quarter. Because our admission decisions are not made until after July 1, you will not know at a pre-registration time whether or not you will be accepted. We advise, therefore, that you pre-register for the courses you would plan to take if you are not admitted in order to protect those options. Failure to participate in pre-registration limits your choice of courses should you not be admitted.

  1. If you have not yet taken Math 324 it is strongly recommended that you pre-register for it. If you have previously taken MATH 324 you should make sure you pre-register for any other course that you might be missing and are required to have complete no later than the Autumn quarter. In addition, you should pre-register for those courses that would apply to your second choice should you not be admitted to the department. Please note that there is only room for one course outside the department during autumn quarter. You should make sure that you don't register for any required out of department courses during the time when departmental required courses are offered that way you avoid any conflict should you be admitted.
  2. Entry codes are required for all 300 entry-level Aeronautics and Astronautics courses. These are distributed to admitted students when they transfer their files. Very seldom are student from outside the department allowed access to 300 level departmental courses. There are some exceptions, consult the academic advisor if you should have questions.

New Students (Registration)

  1. New students to the University who have been accepted to the department should go to the Engineering Advising and Diversity Center in Loew Hall to pick up your records and change your major.
  2. Bring your records and change of major form to the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department, 211C Guggenheim Hall.
  3. Registration will take place when your records have been transferred.

GENERAL INFORMATION


In planning your degree program you should be aware of University, College and Department standards required for graduation. Some of the more important items are listed below:

  1. You need a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to graduate. In addition, a minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be achieved in Aeronautics and Astronautics classes.
  2. Any course taken toward the department's 74-75 credit requirement which is graded less than 1.5 will not count toward the departments required number of credits. If less than a 1.5 is received in any required Aeronautics and Astronautics course, that course must be repeated or replaced with an approved substitution. See the academic advisor for more details.
  3. It is a University requirement that Satisfactory/Non-satisfactory credits (S/NS) may not be used to fulfill any requirements other than pure electives to reach the 180 credits required for graduation. The Satisfactory/Non-satisfactory (S/NS) grading option should not be confused with the Credit/No-Credit graded courses, which are sometimes offered by departments and for which the student has no choice.
  4. The University language requirement will be enforced by the Department, and any deficiency in high school coverage must be removed.
  5. Students on Co-Op assignments should be on signed up with the Co-Op office and register for ENGR co-op credits to insure continued enrollment in the University. Credits thus earned will not count toward the required 180 credits for the degree.
  6. Courses taken to fulfill ROTC obligations are limited in the number that can be applied toward the 180 credits required for graduation.  Check with the Academic Advisor for restrictions.
  7. Students with double major or degree objectives must have prior approval of the academic advisor and must have on file an academic curriculum plan to insure completion of department requirements. The student must make satisfactory progress towards the B.S.A.A.E. degree. Graduation may be delayed, but requirements must be completed on track. Set up a meeting with the Undergraduate Academic Advisor concerning any plans to double major.
  8. If you leave the University, or transfer from the Department, you will be re-admitted only if you meet the requirements in force at the time of the re-entry application.
