Undergraduate Degree Program: Admission to the Department
- ADMISSIONS POLICY
The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is limited,
due to constraints of space, faculty, and budget, in the
number of students that can be accommodated in the
undergraduate program. To ensure that the number of students
admitted does not exceed these constraints and to ensure fair
and equal treatment of all applicants, students who wish to
enter the program are required to follow the admissions
procedure described below.
- APPLICATION PROCEDURE
All undergraduates are admitted to the University of
Washington through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Application forms and general transfer information may be
obtained from the main University web page
http://www.washington.edu. Students wishing to apply for
admission to the department of Aeronautics and Astronautics
must have applied and be admissible to the
University or already be enrolled and in good standing. All
students applying to Aeronautics and Astronautics
must fill out a College of Engineering
on-line application form, available at
http://www.engr.washington.edu/uapp/. If you have any questions
or concerns when filling out the on line application, please
don't hesitate to contact the department at
ugadvising@aa.washington.edu.
An up-to-date transcript from all schools attended (excluding high school) must
be mailed to the department. Even if your transfer information is included on
your U of W transcript you must still submit an unofficial U of W transcript and
including unofficial transcripts from your other schools. These all must be
received by the July 1st closing date. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted
by the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. If you are applying to other
departments check with the individuals departments as their requirements
may be different.
Transfer students apply directly to University's Office of Undergraduate
Admissions, and must also fill out the separate College of
Engineering on-line application form. Transcripts must be sent to both
the department to which you are applying and to the Undergraduate
Admissions Office.
Students who are considering Aeronautics and Astronautics as a major are urged to
consult with the undergraduate advisor in the Department by
the end of their freshman year.
- APPLICATION DEADLINE
Entry into the Department requires that the student begin the
300 level AA course sequences Autumn quarter. A student
wishing to begin the Aeronautics and Astronautics program courses may apply to the
Department as soon as the requirements of Section IV have
been satisfied. The Department application deadline is July
1. The department normally acts on applications only after
the deadline.
- ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A student may apply for admission to the Department of
Aeronautics and Astronautics provided the following
requirements have been met:
Early Admission (Applicable for Autumn Quarter only)
To be considered for early admission,
applicants must be currently enrolled at the UW and have
completed all early admission prerequisite courses prior
to the July 1 application deadline.
The following courses
must be completed prior to the application deadline with a
cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. At least 15 credits of the
prerequisite courses must be completed at the UW.
- 15 credits of mathematics at the level of
MATH 124, 125 & 126 (calculus 1,2,3) or equivalent.
- A minimum of 10 credits of physical science
courses plus accompanying lab at the level of PHYS
121, 122, 123 (calculus based physics)
with labs or CHEM 142, 152 (for science and
engineering majors). Chemical Engineering requires
completion of CHEM 142, 152, 162 and PHYS 121.
- 5 credits of English composition.
Upper-Division Admission
To be considered for upper division admission to the
department, applicants must meet the following minimum
requirements
- Satisfactory completion of 75 quarter credit
hours applicable towards the B.S.A.A.E. graduation
requirements with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75.
- Completion of the following prerequisite
courses, or equivalent, with a minimum grade of 2.0
or better in each course and a 2.5 or better GPA in
the prerequisite courses.
MATH 124 Calculus I |
CHEM 142 Chemistry I |
CSE 142 Comp. Programming |
MATH 125 Calculus II |
PHYS 121 Mechanics & Lab |
AA 210 Statics |
Math 126 Calculus III |

*must be taken prior to or no later than autumn
quarter of admission. Please be aware that there is
only room for one course outside the departmental
required courses during autumn quarter and that is
usually fulfilled by taking MATH 324. Students
are required to complete MATH 324 no later than the
Autumn quarter if not previously taken and the
credit load is such that it would not allow room for
any other courses. (See sample schedule.)
- DEPARTMENTAL ADMISSION CRITERIA
Admission to any of the College of Engineering's
undergraduate degree programs is competitive. The
primary admission criterion is the promise for
success in engineering as indicated by academic
performance, as well as other factors.
Qualifications required of applicants who are not
residents of the State of Washington may be more
stringent than those applied to resident applicants.
An exception is that students from the states of
Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, and Oregon will be considered
on an equal basis with Washington state residents
for admission to this program.
Students from foreign
countries should be aware that completion of the
B.S.A.A.E. degree will not generally be of help
in securing employment in the U.S. aerospace
industry.
- ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS
A diverse student body adds an important element to
the education of all students in the program. To
achieve such diversity, the College recognizes that
special consideration may be needed for some
applicants whose potential is high but whose
background has limited their access to the kind of
early education which promotes superior performance
on tests requiring experience in abstract reasoning.
Thus, any student may provide additional information
regarding special circumstances that should be
considered along with their applications. This
additional information should be contained in a
letter to the admission committee accompanying the
application form.
Special Admission Considerations for Disadvantaged
Students:
In order to be considered for special
admission into this program, a disadvantaged
student, as defined below, must:
- be considered a disadvantaged student by the
U.W. (see below);
- have followed a program which includes
one math and/or science course each quarter
beginning at the appropriate point in these
series (depending on the student's background)
and progressing into the mathematics and science
series required for engineering students;
- have demonstrated a competency level in
recent math and science courses consistent with
the minimum competency level for admission into
the department.
- SELECTION PROCESS
The Undergraduate Committee of the Department will
meet at least once each year for the sole purpose
of selecting those students who will be admitted
into the Aeronautics and Astronautics undergraduate program. Selection
is based on the following factors:
- The grade point average obtained in the
courses listed in IV-1.
(NOTE: A pattern of course repeats and/or
withdrawals is not consistent with the
perception of satisfactory future performance
in the Aeronautics and Astronautics program.)
- The overall grade record of the student.
Students from institutions outside the State of
Washington are strongly encouraged to include
copies of catalog descriptions of courses
relevant to the application. Additional
information such as texts used, course work,
etc. is also helpful for record evaluation.
- Motivation and background.
- PROCEDURE FOR RECONSIDERATION
A student who has been denied admission to the
Department may submit, in writing, a request for
reconsideration to the Undergraduate Admission
Committee. The student should include
the latest available transcripts of academic
achievement, and any additional information which
is relevant to the petition.
A student whose petition is denied may re-apply for
admission in the normal way.
- EQUAL OPPORTUNITY POLICY
Admission to any of the College of Engineering's
undergraduate degree programs is competitive. The
primary admission criterion is degree of qualification
for success in engineering as indicated by academic
performance, and other factors. Also, qualifications
required of applicants not residents of the State of
Washington are more stringent than those applied to
resident applicants.
The University of Washington provides equal opportunity
in education without regard to race, color, creed,
religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age,
marital status, disability, or status as a disabled
veteran or Vietnam era veteran in accordance with the
University of Washington policy and applicable federal
and state statutes and regulations.
