UX recognized the Boeing-UW team with the Excellence Award in the Corporate/College Partnership category "working in partnership with a college or university to address critical business challenges". This was the top award in this category, in which the other finalists were National Defense University, Coles Group Ltd., and Florida Power and Light.
The award to the Boeing-UW team was for the hugely successful Certificate Program in Aircraft Composite Structural Analysis and Design that the UW teaches at Boeing. Kuen Lin, Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, is the director of this program. Kuen, together with Michael Richey of Boeing's LTD Engineering, accepted the award at the ceremonies. On the previous day, at the Training 2007 Conference, also in Orlando, they co-presented the approach that UW and Boeing used to partner and implement the certificate program. Boeing also won another CUX award on its own, in the category of Alignment.

- A&A Department co-founder, Fred Eastman, dies at 102.
A&A Department co-founder and inventor of an innovative and widely adopted device to measure wind tunnel forces, Fred Eastman died Saturday, August 5th, 2006. The Seattle Times Article.
A Special Note from Professor and Chair Adam Bruckner:
I just received this very sad news about the passing of Professor Emeritus Fred Eastman last Saturday. He was 102 years old. Fred was featured in an article in "The Washington Engineer" last year and also in our recent High Flight. Fred was a wonderful person who loved our department, and was planning to visit us again this summer. He was one of the four founding faculty of our department in 1929, and one of the longest-lived (if not the longest) aero faculty in the nation. Among his other contributions to aeronautics, he was responsible for the design of the electromagnetic balance in the Kirsten Wind Tunnel. Fred will be deeply missed. - Adam

Famous alum Scott Crossfield dies in crash

Scott Crossfield as a Student in UW

Scott Crossfield & Professor Joppa in 1986We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of 1986 Distinguished Alumnus and famed test pilot Scott Crossfield (BSAE '49, MSAE '50) in the crash of his single-engine plane on April 19th, 2006. After graduating from our department, Scott joined NACA as a test pilot and was the first to fly at Mach 2. After leaving NACA in 1955 he worked at North American Aviation, where he was involved in all phases of the X-15 rocketplane project, flew the checkout flights, and reached Mach 3. He was later a technical director at North American, served as division vice president of Eastern Airlines, and was consultant to the House Committee on Science and Technology. Crossfield's many honors include presentation of the Harmon and Collier Trophies by President Kennedy, induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and NASA's Distinguished Public Service Medal.
