Near-Term FRC Program
Have ‘major’ facilities, but could use larger effort by more institutions
Present facilities:
- TCS - Translation, Confinement, Sustainment Experiment
- Develop methods based on Rotating Magnetic Fields (RMF) to increase and sustain the flux of FRCs formed by the standard FRTP
- Investigate stability and confinement at larger s and lower densities - study profile modification effects
- STX - Star Thrust Experiment
- separate program to try and form hot FRCs using high power RMF alone.
Proposed facilities:
- SPIRIT -
- form oblate FRCs using newly developed spheromak merging technique
- utilize higher flux to couple with NB current drive
- CDX-U (ion heating); MNX (dynamic tilt stabilization)
Coordinated theoretical effort on kinetic plasmas
